From
the mission of Socrates Sculpture Park
".. providing artists with opportunities to create and exhibit large scale
works in a unique environment that encourages strong interaction between artists,
artworks and the public. "
Each sculpture is on show for a duration of six month. After this period of
time the pieces get either relocated, stored or destroyed. To anticipate the
future of the piece , we created a sculpture, which gets rid of itself.
At the end of August 2001, we planted 64 Douglas Fir Christmas Trees at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York. Each tree, between 6' and 7' tall, is roughly 14 years old. We planted the trees in rows of eight to form a perfect grid that is approximately 60' x 60'. After Thanksgiving, the tree farm will open for business. A large sign and flyers distributed in the local communities will announce the opening of the tree farm. For the cutting of the trees, we will supply our customers with saws and will be available to assist in any other way. After the trees are cut, a grid of stumps will remain in the ground until the show's close in May 2002.
