World Views Short Term Project
North Face of 1 World Trade
(Floors 89-95)
To work with
the architectural significance of the WTC and use its enormous grid of uniform
windows, we developed the idea to spell a word on the North face of Tower One.
Using the windows as elements, the letters would appear like LCD characters. The
word would become visible at dusk when different windows were illuminated by interior
light and others darkened by closed blinds. In order to billboard a phrase which
did not have a particular meaning, but could have a certain familiarity, we chose
to present the word "E-Team", both a generic expression and the name for our collaboration.
To illuminate the word, we needed 279 "dark" and 127 "light" windows on 7
floors (floor 89 to floor 95), and the help and support of the offices located
on these floors. We contacted the 14 respective offices and provided them with
floor plans that showed what blinds should be closed or opened for the night of
the lighting. Our interactions and the support we received from the businesses
became an integral part of the project. Thanks to the cooperation of 12 participating
offices, the event happened on the night of March 29, 2001.
